We've found that the development of caring and consistent relationships with non-parent adults and young people is a need of all children, especially those who face tough odds against success. Studies have demonstrated that children who meet regularly with their mentors: |
| |
• |
Are more trusting of their parents or guardians |
| |
• |
Are less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs or alcohol |
| |
• |
Feel more competent about their ability to succeed in school |
| |

There are two components of Project Friendship. One matches adults with children 6 to 14 years of age. They meet for three to four hours a week for a minimum of one year. Junior Project Friendship (download brochure) matches high school juniors and seniors with children 6 to 12 years of age. They meet for two to three hours a week during the school year.
Big and Little Friends get together each week and do what friends do: talk, play sports, see a movie, go hiking, and share a meal. We've found that these experiences build bonds of friendship, nurture self-esteem, encourage new interests and promote caring for others.

Ways you can help FCA's Mentoring Programs |
| |

Become a Big Friend to a child in need! Do you have a few hours a week to spend with a child? If so, consider mentoring a child. Children who are mentored have improved self-esteem and school performance; reduced incidents of crime, premature parenting, and substance abuse; and greater expectations for one's future. In addition, volunteers who mentor report feeling better about themselves, are more connected to the community and find tremendous satisfaction in helping others. Your time is their future. Contact Mayx Holmes at mholmes@fcagency.org to learn more or to receive an application. |
